History of Westerly
The present-day Town of Westerly was first settled in 1648 and was incorporated into a town in 1669. Westerly’s early industry was boat building led by RI war hero Oliver Hazard Perry. In 1813, Perry was sent by the Navy to complete the building of a US squadron of ships to challenge control of Lake Erie from the British. On September 10, 1813, Perry engaged a superior British armada but won the day by sailing directly into the British lines and firing broadside at close range.
The battle was pivotable in the eventual American victory over the British and Perry is famously quoted in his post-action report to the Navy, “We have met the enemy and they are ours”. Sadly, Perry died at sea at the age of just 34.
In the late 19th century large deposits of granite were discovered in Westerly and quarries and granite finishing became the chief industry of Westerly. The rose-colored granite was a favorite of architects along the East coast. Westerly granite was used to build the Library of Congress, the Travelers Tower in Hartford, as well as most of the quadrangle building, at the University of RI. The granite was a favorite for funerary and statue monument makers. Many of the statues in Central Park are made for Westerly Granite as well as most of the monuments in the Gettysburg, PA battlefield.
The discovery of granite ignited a huge exodus of trained stone mason from Italy to Westerly in order to quarry and work the granite. Today, much of Westerly’s population can trace their roots back to their Italian born grandfathers and great grandfathers who were stone masons.
