History of Scituate
The present-day Town of Scituate was first settled in 1710 when a group of colonists emigrated from their home in Scituate, Massachusetts to Rhode Island, naming it after their previous hometown.
The Massachusetts colonists who first settled in Scituate Massachusetts, emigrated from Plymouth and Kent England in 1627. The spelling of the town name Scituate is an anglicization of the Native American Wampanoag word “Satuit”, which translates “cold brook”. Cold brook refers to the Satuit Brook, a stream which still runs into the inner harbor in Scituate, MA today. Originally, Scituate RI was part of Providence, but was granted its own charter in 1731.
Scituate is most famous for the large reservoir which inhabits 40% of its land mass. In 1915, the Rhode Island General Assembly voted to dam the Pawtuxet River to create a fresh-water reservoir to supply Providence County. The resulting reservoir project forced the eviction of thousands of inhabitants and drown the villages of Kent, Richmond, Rockland, South Scituate, Ashland, Saundersville, Ponaganset and parts of Clayville forever. In all, the 39-billion-gallon.
Scituate Reservoir project resulted in the condemnation and confiscation of 375 houses, seven schools, six churches, six mills, and thirty dairy farms.
