History of Little Compton
The present-day town of Little Compton was originally inhabited by the Sakonnet Indians. In the mid-17th century English settlers from the Plymouth Colony moved West and settled in Sakonnet with the acquiescence of the female Native American sachem, Awashonks. In 1682, Sakonnet was incorporated by the Plymouth Colony and was renamed Little Compton, after the English town of Little Compton in Warwickshire, England. In 1747, a Royal commission changed the colony borders and Little Compton, Tiverton, and Bristol became independent towns as part of Rhode Island.
One of the first settlers in Little Compton was Colonel Benjamin Church, who would become well known as the developer of the first Army Ranger units. Church emulated the Indian warfare method of using small, mobile groups of forces who used the forest and ground for cover, instead of the English practice of mounting frontal attacks while in formation.
