A packed by owner or PBO carton is a carton that has literally been packed by the owner, aka the customer, and not by the carrier. PBO cartons include corrugated cartons as well as plastic totes. Since the carrier has not had any chance to verify the condition of the items that are packed, or the quality of the packing methods used, damage or loss to items in PBO cartons are usually not accepted under any carrier’s valuation policy. However, if there is evidence of gross mishandling, claims for contents of PBO cartons that are damaged will be honored by Arpin of RI.
